Kleinmond
is a tranquil little coastal town in the Overberg, Western Cape, between the mountain and the sea
and situated
inside a UNESCO-declared Biosphere, with over 1600 species of Fynbos. Just an
hour away from Cape Town, and 20 minutes from Hermanus.
Small
enough for a quiet weekend getaway, and big enough to have the infrastructure of
schools, sport facilities, restaurants and shops. Nature lovers will enjoy the
hiking trails along the coastal walkway and for the more adventurous there are a
number of hiking trails in the mountains. If you really feel adventurous, you
can go ab-seiling, climbing, dune surfing or do river-rafting.
From
June to November, Southern Right Whales
can be seen from the coastline, where they come
to mate and calf. Birders can tick off the Cape Rock
Jumper, amongst 360 other species.
Of special interest are the
wild horses, roaming free in the marshlands surrounding Kleinmond. Believed to
be South Africa's only herd of wild horses in a wetland habitat, you might catch
a glimpse of them at the Bot River lagoon area, next to Rooisands Nature
Reserve.
The champagne air, pristine beaches, spectacular seascapes and mountains will
revitalize your mind, body and soul!
Kleinmond
flies the Blue Flag!
The
Blue Flag is an annual, international award given only to those
beaches that meet excellence in safety, amenities, cleanliness
and environmental management.
South Africa was
the first country outside Europe to be granted Blue Flag
accreditation for its beaches. For this season, Kleinmond and a few other beaches have been awarded Blue Flag
status.
Many tourists are
said to choose Blue Flag beaches as holiday destinations with
the assurance of safety and cleanliness.
