Benefits Offered to Members of the SAIF


Education and Training: Realising the need for both operator/artisan and technical training for the Industry, the institute is committed to ongoing development of operators' courses and seminars in conjunction with both local and overseas institutes and a certificated course is run twice a year at the Witwatersrand Technikon.

Trends and Technology: You or your company can benefit by being kept up to date and familiar with local and international technology and trends relating to foundry activities.

Foundry and Heat Treatment SA Journal: You will receive a FREE copy of the Journal, a bi-monthly publication which reaches decision-makers at all levels and sectors of the industry. The Journal covers topical local and international technology and applications in Foundry practice as well as news of the SAIF activities.

Institute of British Foundrymen Affiliation Should you select this option in your membership application, you will also receive the journal of the Institute of British Foundrymen -- "Foundryman".

Technical Papers: These are presented to members and their guests on a monthly basis, and cover all fields in the metal casting industry.

Works Visits: Several times a year, the Institute organises visits to a foundry or allied interest works.

National Foundry Conference:This is held in Johannesburg, South Africa, and features international and local speakers on technical subjects from process development for lost foam casting production to research and development of moulding sands, metals and computer modules.

Annual SAIF Dinner: A purely social function to relax in good company. Awards presented at this function include the Morganite Medal for best presentation paper of the year by an SAIF Member, Non-Members' Diplomas for best presentation paper by non-members, Past President's Certificate and Plaque, and Honorary Membership.

Literature: The SAIF library is open to any member, making both international publications and reference works available.

Seminars: These are organised in conjunction with local or international developments as they occur. These one to three day seminars cover foundry and related subjects and include a bound manual of papers.

International Tours Tours are organised by the Institute to GIFA in Dusseldorf and the Foundry World Trade Fair in Birmingham, United Kingdom. The SAIF has access to sister organisations in Europe, USA and the UK.

Who Qualifies for Membership:


The Institute accepts all those who are interested in the art, science and technique of founding in its various forms of metallurgy, melting procedure, moulding, pouring, diecasting, dressing of castings, heat treatment, patternmaking, costing and quality control, irrespective of academic qualifications.

The rights and privileges are the same in all grades of membership and include participation in all Institute activities, subscription to the official publication, Foundry & Heat Treatment SA Journal, preferential booking and reduced fees in all activities and services.

Individual SAIF members are able to request to become affiliates of the IBF (Institute of British Foundrymen). IBF affiliates will receive the `British Foundrymen', this is the IBF Journal, published monthly, which contains excellent technical papers. This will help to keep SAIF members informed on technology developments and general World foundry news and events. Affiliates will be able to use the IBF office and facilities when visiting the UK, and to attend IBF courses and seminars at member's rates.

Grades of Membership and Fees for 1999


Company Membership : Any individual, firm or organisation interested in participating in the stated activities of the Institute and desirous of lending its support to the Institute. Privileges apply only to the plant or office where such membership is held, but include all personnel employed at such company.

form to apply.

Complete it and submit it on-line. We will contact you with regards payment of dues prior to council meeting to approve new memberships. Please note that dues must be paid before your admission to the SAIF will be considered!
