The squad shows three changes from that which did duty in the recent home series against Australia (just losing the series 2-3).   Kim Meyer and Taryn Laurie sit out and in comes Jackie Geyser, who is currently competing in Holland.

Australia are the reigning World Cup and Olympic title holders and Korea are currently placed 5th in the world rankings.  Both these teams will be using the event as preparation for the Champions' Trophy in June this year and in the longer term, for the Olympics in Sydney 2000.  India, who toured South Africa a year ago, are much tougher competitors than their 12th place finish at the 1998 World Cup suggests.

Said SAHA President Clare Digby, commenting on the upcoming Four Nations:   "We showed a great team effort in the recent tests against Australia, but we must strive to achieve more consistent standards of performance.  The coaches and players have set different goals for each of our opponents on this tour.  Results against both India and Korea will be important in our quest for a place in the Olympics next year."

RETURN TO INTERNATIONAL HOCKEY

In 1993, South Africa was re-admitted to the international sporting arena.  Many sports anticipated a quick return to the top of world rankings, but few were ready for the progress that other nations had made.  In very few instances were sports able to go straight back to the top.  The South African Hockey fraternity braced itself for the worst having regard to the rapid growth of hockey world-wide and certain that the lack of artificial turf pitches would put South Africa within the 'also rans.'   The South African National Men's and Women's teams soon changed these perceptions.

THE SOUTH AFRICAN MEN'S HOCKEY TEAMsahapic1.jpg - 10630 Bytes

The South African Men's Hockey team have achieved some remarkable successes in a relatively short period of time.  If the rate of progress is maintained, then it will not be too long before a top 6 ranking is achieved.   There are approximately 120 hockey playing countries in the world.

Since 1993 the following successes have been recorded:

1993 Winners, 4th Africa Nations Cup (Kenya)
1993  Fifth, Intercontinental Cup (Poland) (Winners Fair Play Trophy)
1994  Second, Indira Ghandi Cup (India)
1994  Second, Madrid Tournament (Spain) (Winners Fair Play Trophy)
1994  Tenth, World Cup (Australia)
1995  Winners, 6th All Africa Games (Zimbabwe)
1996  Winners, 5th Africa Cup for Nations (South Africa)
1996  Tenth, 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games
1996  Second, Commissioner's Cup, (India)
1997  Ninth, 9th World Cup Qualifier (Kuala Lumpur)
1997  Winners, 4 Nations Tournament (Russia)
1998  Second, 4 Nations Tournament (South Africa)
1999   Winners 7th All Africa Games (South Africa)

Coach: Giles Bonnet ;  Manager: Wendell Domingo.

THE SOUTH AFRICAN WOMEN'S HOCKEY TEAM

In the short space of time since the resumption of international matches, the South African Women's side has achieved some astonishing results that genuinely make the team candidates for a higher spot in the international rankings.

This is their record of successes:

1994  Winners, Africa Cup (South Africa)
1995  Winners, 6th All Africa Games (Zimbabwe)
1996  Fifth, Preliminary Qualifying World Cup, (Trinidad and Tobago)
1997  Winners, 9th World Cup Qualifier (Zimbabwe)
1998  Seventh, 9th World Cup (Holland)
1998  Winners, 3rd Africa Cup (Zimbabwe)
