April and May have been busy months and the weeks ahead will be no less so. We can look forward to a jam-packed competitions calendar featuring: * Over twenty five interprovincial tournaments from U/14 to senior levels; * A series of home internationals against Zimbabwe, India and Wales; and * The All Africa Games. Congratulations to KZN and Western Province on their respective wins at the women's and men's U/21 IPTs. Southern Gauteng deserves a special mention for achieving "the double" in the Spar and Nedbank National Hockey Leagues. The Leagues were closely contested this year and this augurs well for the future. Talking about the future...... it is fantastic to see new artificial pitches coming on stream and all who contributed to the establishment of the pitches at Parktown Boys High School and Pirates Club must be congratulated on their efforts. To a significant extent the growth and development of the game at all levels and in all areas is dependent on the installation of artificial turfs and we hope that it is not too long before such facilities are developed in the Boland, Eastern Gauteng, Griquas, Mpumalanga, Northern Free State and Southern Cape regions. I will be in Brisbane in the second week of June for various FIH meetings and look forward to seeing all delegates at the mid-term SAHA Council meeting on the weekend of 25/26 June in Johannesburg. With best wishes, Clare Digby |
The four-nations in Australia provided the SA women's team with the experience of touring in a foreign country and competing in a tournament environment. Except for participation in major events such as the World Cup and Commonwealth Games every four years, the national team more often than not competes in one-on-one test series which do not place as many physical and especially mental demands on players and officials. Tournament hockey has the effect of cumulatively adding pressure on the team to perform.
Our opponents in the Telstra Challenge were India, South Korea and hosts, Australia.
India is a vastly improved team, evidenced by their two wins against South Korea.
The Koreans, always very tough opponents, play a physical and high intensity style of hockey that is very difficult to counter.
South Africa has only played South Korea once in more than a hundred matches since readmission to international competition - we lost to them in the OQT in November 1995 - and so our victory in the opening game against them had special significance.
As an added benefit, the tour gave us the opportunity to make a realistic appraisal of our position relative to other teams and to measure our performance against opponents that play a different brand of hockey - distinct from Australia, England and the like.
However, it was a challenge to play against Australia again as they had had three weeks intensive full time training since returning home from their tour to South Africa in March.
All in all, we achieved some fantastic results though our final match against the Aussies was perhaps the most disappointing. We played the game with two injured midfielders and had a player sent off. These factors, coupled with the effect of a demanding travel schedule, prevented us from performing at our best.
