How can healthy eating and meal planning help my diabetes?

The most important thing you can do to balance your blood glucose is to eat the right foods. Having diabetes does not mean you will have to give up all the foods you now enjoy. However meal planning must become a big part of your diabetes treatment. All food you eat turns to glucose in your body and you must have enough insulin, either insulin you make or give, to use this food glucose for energy. When you are planning your meals, it will help your diabetes if you:

As you can see from the picture below, we should all eat more from the lower half of the pyramid than from the top. To balance your energy needs:

         

Fats, Sweets and alcohol

A serving can be: 1/8 avocado; 1 T cream cheese; 1 t butter, oil or margarine; 10 peanuts

         
Meat and Others  

(2-3 servings daily; 0g carbohydrates/serving)

A serving can be: 2-3 oz. cooked lean meat, poultry or fish ; 1/2 - 3/4 cup tuna ; 1 egg  

Milk

(2-3 servings daily; about 12g carbohydrates/serving)

A serving can be: 1 cup milk ; 1 cup yogurt  

Fruits

(3-4 servings daily; 15g carbohydrates/serving)

A serving can be: 1 small fresh fruit ; 1/2 cup fruit juice  

Vegetables

(3-5 servings daily; about 5g carbohydrates/serving)

A serving can be: 1 cup raw vegetables ; 1/2 cup cooked vegetables ; 1/2 cup tomato juice  

Grains, Beans and Starchy Vegetables

(6 or more servings daily; about 15g carbohydrates/serving)

A serving can be: 1/2 small bagel or English muffin ; 1/2 cup cooked beans, peas or corn ; 1 small potato
