Poliomyelitis begins as a generalised illness 1-2 weeks after
exposure, with muscle weakness, headache, neck stiffness, fever, nausea,
vomiting and sore throat. Paralysis develops, starting as neck and back
stiffness, with pain and tenderness in affected muscles. After a brief period
when the muscle spasm, asymmetrical floppy paralysis occurs; sensation remains
normal.
Polio is fatal in 5-10% of cases, whilst 15% of sufferers have permanent
incapacitating paralysis.
