What
is diabetic neuropathy?
Nerves
in our body can be damaged by high blood glucose, high blood pressure, drinking
too much alcohol and exposure to toxic chemicals. These nerves can be damaged
causing severe pain, stomach and bowel problems, as well as problems with sexual
activity.
How
will I know if I have diabetic nerve problems?
Some
types of nerve problems have no symptoms. For this reason, it is very important
to see your doctor regularly. You will be checked for the ability to sense
temperature, pinprick, vibration and the position of your toes. Be sure to tell
your doctor if you have had any of the following:
Weakness,
Faintness or light-headedness, especially when standing up from lying down
Loss
of appetite, feeling full early in a meal, bloating, stomach pain or cramps,
nausea, vomiting or unwanted weight loss
Constipation,
diarrhea or loss of bowel control
Loss
of urine control
Sexual
problems such as impotence in men and loss of vaginal lubrication or painful
sexual activity for women
If
I have any of these, what should I do?
Discuss
with your doctor what treatment you should have.
If
you have lost feeling in your feet, it is very important to take good care
of your feet, wear proper shoes and avoid activities such as jogging that
can hurt your feet.
Keep
your blood glucose and blood pressure in good control.
Do
not smoke or use tobacco products.
