Why
should I test my blood glucose at home?
Testing
your own blood glucose levels will give you the information you need to
successfully manage your diabetes. Without regular testing, you will not know
how your food choices, exercise and medicines are working, or when to make
changes.
What are the recommended blood glucose levels?
| Before meals | 1-2 hours after meals | At bedtime |
| Between 4.4-6.7 mmol/L | Less than 10 mmol/L | 5.5-7.8 mmol/L |
You
will notice that the blood glucose levels are higher after eating.
When
should I test my blood glucose level?
How
often you check your blood glucose at home depends on a number of factors:
What
type of diabetes you have and how much your blood glucose changes during the
day
The
type and amount of diabetes medicine you take and how often
Other reasons you would test or increase the amount
of daily tests:
During
times of illness and stress
When
your medicine, food or exercise has been changed
Ask
your doctor or diabetes educator to plan the right schedule for you.
