Hepatitis A and B are different viral infections of the liver,
which have similar symptoms and signs. They both cause symptoms of 'gastro'
(loss of appetite, vomiting and diarrhoea) and yellow jaundice. Hepatitis A
(Infectious Hepatitis) has a shorter incubation period and is spread by direct
exposure and person-to-person spread. Hepatitis B (Serum Hepatitis) has a longer
incubation period; it is spread both by body fluids (e.g. blood, semen, saliva)
and person-to-person spread.
In most cases of hepatitis (A and B) there is a full recovery. However,
occasionally a very severe form of Hepatitis A occur which is rapidly fatal.
Furthermore, Hepatitis B may result in a long-term liver infection and
eventually cause permanent liver damage which is ultimately fatal.
