Diphtheria is a severe bacterial infection of the throat (and
sometimes, of the skin) which results in the formation of a gray membrane over
the throat, tonsils and voice-box. Although the infection begins as a mild sore
throat with a moderate fever and lethargy, it rapidly becomes severe because the
bacteria responsible produces a toxin which can damage the heart, liver, kidneys
and nerves.
Diphtheria can be fatal: the Membrane may prevent breathing or the toxin may
result in collapse or permanent heart damage.
