Why
should I lower my blood cholesterol?
When
you have diabetes, you are at a greater risk of getting damage to your blood
vessels. This can be caused by high blood glucose, high blood pressure and high
blood fats, such as cholesterol and triglycerides. You can help avoid this by
keeping these in goal range. It is important for you to know where you stand.
How
can I lower my cholesterol?
Eat
a diet low in fat, saturated (animal) fat and cholesterol.
Use
unsaturated oils and margarines.
Use
skim or low fat milk, yogurts or cheese.
No
more than 3 egg yolks per week
Avoid
sauces, butter and cream added to food.
Eat
more fiber.
Increase
your daily physical activity (talk to your doctor first if you don't
exercise now).
If
you need to loose weight, increase your activity and decrease your daily
intake by 250-500 calories per day. Avoid "crash" diets.
If
your doctor has given you medicine, take it as directed.
