Why should I adjust my insulin?

If your blood glucose stays within normal to goal range with your current insulin dose then you probably don't need to change. Some reasons you might want to adjust your insulin dose could be:

Out of range Blood Glucose Value (Not explained by food, illness, exercise, stress) Pattern Adjustment* (Start by adding 1-2 units. Watch your blood glucose for 2-3 days before making another change. It is better to change 1 dose at a time.)
If your Fasting blood glucose is high Increase   PM or bedtime N/L
low Decrease  PM or bedtime N/L
Before Lunch high Increase   morning short-acting insulin
low Decrease  morning short-acting insulin
Before Dinner high Increase   morning N/L or lunchtime short-acting
low Decrease  morning N/L or lunchtime short-acting
Before bedtime high Increase   dinner short-acting
low Decrease  dinner short-acting
During the night low Decrease  evening N/L or move dinner N/L to bedtime
