Poor and Needy Project
1. INTRODUCTION
1 Samuel 2:8 " He raises up the poor from the dust;
He lifts the needy from the ash heap"
A place has been established where physical, emotional and spiritual needs can be met, a sense of belonging can be found and where the hope of something better can be cultivated.
Compassion and Community are the keywords in serving the poor and needy. Facilitating of relationships is the primary objective and programmes are implemented to strengthen this.
2. ACTIVITIES
2.1 Basic Care
A cooked meal is served every day and clothing is provided to those in need. During the winter we try, where possible, to provide blankets for the people sleeping on the streets and in other dwellings. Those in need of medical attention are referred to the Othandweni sickbay or mobile clinic. During last year’s winter, people where accommodated in the Irene Church Hall for two nights.
2.2 Drill Hall Community
This community, which is squatting illegally in the Drill Hall under appalling conditions, is visited weekly. Help has been given in establishing a committee representing the residents. Twice a week a (MES) youth worker of has a playgroup session with about 20 children of the Drill Hall.
2.3 Art classes
Some of the peopleregularly participate in art classes, where they make cards for Christmas or Valentine’s Day. Other art products like earrings and necklaces are also made. This is serving a dual purpose, as the classes not only keep the people busy, but also give them the opportunity to create income.
2.4 Literacy classes
As part of the training department, literacy classes are given to the poor and needy. Many people cannot read or write, or they only know the basic words. It is important for building their self-esteem to teach them how to read and write.
