There are basically two types of hauntings and spirit sightings. The first of these is what is known as a materialization, where a spirit cloaks its body with ectoplasm (a substance allowing the spirit to become visible on the Earth Plane) for a specific reason. The reason for this usually to convey a message directly to someone, console or assist someone in distress. When the ectoplasm is discarded the spirit becomes invisible again to those on the Earth Plane.
The second kind of haunting is what is known as an etheric remnant. When the physical body dies the spirit moves on taking with it the aura leaving behind only the etheric body. The etheric is an electro-magnetic charge which very often takes a very long time to dissipate depending on how well or badly the person lived their life. Although the etheric is lifeless and has no intyelligence or personality of its own it is magnetically drawn to the places the person used to frequent. This is the mindless haunting that occurs and can often be seen as the mist hovering above burial grounds.
