After graduating to tenor sax and flute he was fortunate enough to play with musicians such as Humphrey Lyttelton, John Dankworth and Roy Williams. He worked as MD in many musicals in the UK. He emigrated to South Africa in 1981 and became a founder member of the Fat Sound. He has recently received a B.A. in music and musicology from UNISA and at present he is studying for his Masters as it is his intention to become more deeply involved in a wider spectrum of music.
Jake Pressly : Trombone & Leader
Jake Pressly was born in Scotland but moved to live in England while in his 'teens. Ian Menzies, of the Clyde Valley Stompers, had already come to rescue and guide Jake through his struggle with the trombone and when he arrived in Northamtonshire he started playing with bands in the New Orleans Jazz circle. He remained in Northants until the late Sixties playing with a big band led by trombonist/pianist John Betts and with the Cambridge-based big band MC2 which was run by Professor Hugh McDonald. After dabbling in the London jazz scene and playing with a Chicago type rock band called Granite, Jake emigrated to South Africa. Soon after arriving in Johannesburg he formed a band based on the small group jazz played by the Ellington sidemen and called it the Jake Pressly Jump Band. Around 1983 during a trip to the UK, Jake managed to persuade his former band leaders into parting with some of their charts and arrived back in South Africa to found The Fat Sound. His time is shared between The Fat Sound and the Classic Jazz Masters.
