Orientation and Mobility

Teach blind and partially sighted persons independence in orientation and mobility.
Gain confidence in becoming independent. Teaching people to use their remaining sight effectively.

• How to walk with a sighted person.
  
• Coping alone indoors without the use of a cane.
  
• Skills of daily living.
• Basic skills are: Money identification, pouring of cold and hot liquids, making of a sandwich.
  
• Colour contrasting, organizing a home, clothes identification clean ing, ironing, baking, cooking etc.
  

Full course is plus minus 3 months depending on the individual. Modified course depends on what the individual's needs are.

Learning to use the cane or white stick indoors and outdoors. Coping independently in a quiet residential area, coping with obstacles within ones path, coping with terrain changes, crossing streets safely and independently, crossing a quiet robot to a 3 phase robot. Coping in busy shopping areas and shopping centres, learning to catch busses and trains. To be able to get from A to B safely and independently

Important: A person must have a medical certificate and a report from an eye specialist before training begins. Our orientation and mobility instructor will make arrangements to do an assessment
