A prayer and action group named CALL (Catholic Action Life League) has recently been formed as a result of the common desire of various Catholics from a cross section of parishes within the Archdiocese of Cape Town. The desire was for the formation of a group that would be dedicated to searching for innovative and effective ways of defending the teachings of the Catholic Church with a particular emphasis on faith and morals. Spurred on by the Holy Spirit (so rightly called the Spirit of Truth), we have discovered that so many concerns relating to life-issues are inseparably intertwined, as it were, with fundamentals of our Catholic faith.

Our Vision and Mission

As a group of Catholics we believe in the sanctity of human life, made in the image and likeness of God and destined for immortality. Therefore, in response to the numerous attacks on human life, some of which are now even entrenched in our country’s legislation, we, are dedicated to promoting and defending the teachings of the Church, with particular emphasis on faith and morals.

As a group, it is our experience that a growing number of Catholics are not fully aware of these teachings. Therefore we intend to become well-informed in our own right, and help others to do the same.

In South Africa we are now faced with the onslaught of government-sanctioned* secular sex education in our schools, which seriously undermines the moral teachings of our faith, and promotes unsatisfactory information - especially about AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases. In addition, the media (to which many of our children are constantly exposed) largely promote a so-called "non-judgemental" attitude to immoral behaviour. We believe that such trends and attitudes seriously undermine the efforts of the Church to help establish a Christian civilization of love. As Christians, should this not be of grave concern to us all?

• For these reasons, we wish to form a prayer and action group, which will strive to do the following:

• Pray – especially the Rosary, and have Masses offered up for all victims of abortion.

• Support other pro-life groups, especially those dedicated to assisting mothers in distress.

• Promote literature and videos which inform people of the moral teachings of the Church, and the truth about abortion, euthanasia, AIDS, sex education, etc.

• Participate in life-chains and peaceful demonstrations that oppose abortion, sexually explicit material, etc.

• Write letters to the press (especially the secular press) as the need arises.

• Invite speakers to our parishes who can (amongst other things):
  • Enlighten and encourage us with regard to the truth and beauty of our faith.
  • Speak to the youth and promote chastity among them.

• Pray for and support our beloved Holy Father, Pope John Paul II, and obey the Magisterium in union with him, in all matters of faith and morals.

We place our group under the protection of Our Lady of Guadalupe (patroness of the unborn) and the Holy Innocents, and we warmly invite all who feel the same concerns to join us.

* The Planned Parenthood Association of South Africa is a prime example of an association that promotes destructive sex education material. This association receives support from various government departments, including the European Union

We welcome and adhere to the directives propagated by the Vatican's Pontifical Council for the Family in which we find sound guidance for Modern day families. We believe that "parents must reject secularized and anti-natalist sex education, which puts God at the margin of life… This sex education is spread by large international organizations that promote abortion, sterilization and contraception." (Pontifical Council for the Family: The truth and meaning of Human Sexuality, )

"Sex education which is the basic right and duty of parents, must always be carried out under their attentive guidance whether at home or in educational centres chosen and controlled by them" (Familiaris Consortio, 37) and "removing their children whenever this education does not correspond to their own principles" (Charter of the Rghts of Families, Article 5c)
