Sibyl: Roman prophetess
Sibyl is a Roman prophetess from southern Italy. She refused the favours of Apollo, the god of prophecy, and he condemned her to an endless old age, although she was immortal.
Her biggest claim to fame though is the Sibylline Books, a collection of oracles detailing the destiny of Rome. Sibyl offered the books for sale to Rome during the rule of the Etruscan kings, but the offer was refused.
Sibyl then burned three books and offered the remaining six at the same price. Again the offer was refused and she burnt three more, offering the last three at the same price again. The Romans closed the deal in fear that all the oracles would be destroyed forever.
