Daphne: Greek water goddess

This is another virgin goddess who likes to roam the wilderness, much like Artemis. Daphne is the daughter of the river god Peneius and thus a water nymph.

When Apollo taunted the love god Eros, he shot a flurry of arrows, the first arrow to strike Apollo was gold tipped and he immediately fell in love with Daphne. However, the second was lead tipped and this made Daphne indifferent to Apollo's attention, just as with all previous aspirant lovers.

Apollo relentlessly pursued Daphne and in desperation called on her father for help, whereupon she turned herself into a laurel tree. Apollo embraced the tree and declared that it shall in future be worn as a crown by heroes and conquerors.
