AN OKAVANGO SEASON

BY mALCOLM mEINTJES

IF YOU'RE DUE TO FISH THE OKAVANGO, YOU'VE GOT TO READ THIS BOOK FIRST!

The Okavango Swamps in northern Botswana is a fantastic wonderland for bird lovers and anglers alike. Until relatively recently, its potential as a flyfishing venue went unnoticed, but the reputation of fish such as tiger fish, threespot tilapia, olive and thinface largemouth bream is drawing more and more flyfishers to its rivers and lagoons. This book is about flyfishing for these species in a river that flows through the great Kalahari desert, but never finds the sea.

EXCERPTS FROM " AN OKAVANGO SEASON"

If the Okavango river is enigmatic, it is because it casts such a spell over those who enter. I know it as a quiet river, whispering if you listen carefully, sighing as though, along its bends and turns, it foretells its ultimate fate. Though it swirls along a course long dictated by time, flanked by gently waving papyrus and longer blonde-fringed reeds, its flow is clear, embracing a pale lemon-lime complexion…..

…..The "catfish run" will be discovered by both the antics and noise of the birds. All shapes, sizes and colours clamber and clutter their way along the papyrus whenever a pack is discovered. The catfish themselves betray their whereabouts by the sound of the papyrus being thrashed and, when you look closer, you will see the dark whiskered heads of the fish constantly surfacing.

There is excitement in the air and even the anglers in the boats will exhibit trembling fingers as they unhook their lures. For on the perimeters of the run are tigerfish and in this environment one can be broken up with ease…..
