The Witwatersrand Woodturners is a club of about 50 woodturners in the Gauteng area that have come together to share the woodturning experience, exchange ideas and experience, and further evolve the art (and craft?) of woodturning.
The principal aim of the Witwatersrand Woodturners (besides furthering woodturning as an art form) is to improve the level of skill of individuals belonging to the club. This is done by having monthly meetings at which a specific project is set and judged by the guru's in the club. Each submitted item is individually discussed to provide members with valuable feedback on improving their output. Regular workshops are held during which beginners are assisted in refining their skills.
Some of the members of the club are producing true artworks, which are sold through galleries around the area and around the country.
The Witwatersrand Woodturners is affiliated to the Witwatersrand Woodworkers Association, which focuses on woodworking in general, and includes disciplines as varied as toymaking, cabinetmaking and socialising.
The Witwatersrand Woodturners meet on the first Monday of the month at Helpmekaar Boys High at 18:00. The school is located in Melle St in Braamfontein.
