Revisions to the A+ Exam scheduled for 2000
Please note, once
you or your students are A+ certified you retain this designation. There is no need to re-certify.
The A+ Advisory Committee with approval of CompTIA's Board of Directors announces two
significant changes to the A+ Core and A+ DOS/Windows certification examinations. CompTIA
will convert from the conventional test format to an adaptive test format in the third
quarter of 2000. CompTIA anticipates posting the new objectives and weightings
approximately May 2000.
Adaptive Format
Computerized adaptive testing (CAT) is a test format that determines the test taker's
ability to answer an item to the best of their knowledge. If the item is incorrect, the
next question will be less difficult. If the item is correct, the next question will be
more difficult. The adaptive methodology for how the selection of the items that will be
presented depend on the item response theory (IRT) to adjust items and estimate the
candidate's ability to answer the items. The adaptive test format may reduce the number of
questions and shorten the test without affecting the reliability of the test.
CompTIA's A+ exam in the adaptive test format will be available
worldwide, the third quarter (approximately August 2000). Please note: The content areas
and objectives of the A+ exam will not change. No new technology areas or objectives will
be added at this time.
Revised Exam
The A+ Advisory Committee has determined and identified the content areas to be changed,
updated, or added for the anticipated revision of the A+ exams. It is anticipated that the
revised test will go live late third quarter or early fourth quarter. These changes will
affect the current objectives posted on the website. CompTIA will convert from the
conventional test format to an adaptive test format in the third quarter of 2000.
Furthermore, CompTIA anticipates revisions to the A+ content to launch in fourth quarter
2000.
These changes will
include:
Elimination of the
Windows 3.1 objectives and items
Elimination of the
Customer Satisfaction objectives and items
Developing new
test objectives and items in the following areas.
·
Windows 98
·
Windows 2000
·
Windows NT, version 4.0
·
Linux - baseline, elementary information
only
A beta test with
new items will be available prior to the launch of the new test.
Further details
will be made available as decisions are made and the content areas are defined, created,
and refined.

The i-Net+ is expected to become the
preferred industry credential for Webmasters, network and Internet support staff, and
network administrators. The certification programme is aimed specifically at individuals interested in following
Internet-related careers. The exam tests the learner’s ability to implement and maintain
Internet, Intranet and Extranet infrastructure and services as well as the ability to
develop related applications.
One
product currently available is the i-Net+ Study Guide published by Sybex. This study guide
provides all the information the learner needs to prepare for the i-Net+ exam. The
accompanying CD contains i-Net+ test-preparation software and a bonus practice exam.
For
training companies wanting to add more value to their presentation of the I-Net+ training,
the 400 page i-Net+ Exam Notes companion book is available. This covers all the material
necessary to pass the exam, singling out critical information, outlining necessary
procedures, identifying exam essentials, explaining key terms and concepts, and providing
sample questions.
