SAIS - South African Institute of Security


The South African Institute of Security is the leading body controlling the professionalism of the security industry of southern Africa.

The principle objectives of the Institute are to promote and maintain high ethical standards of expertise, work and personal conduct on the part of professional security officials. Secondly, the Institute endeavours to achieve advancement of professionalism in the security industry by the education and training and development of security practitioners.

Membership of the Institute comprises fellows, members and graduates and there is a distinct progress path from graduate to member to fellow.

All candidates for election to the class of graduate, must be active security practitioners and have attained a personal standing in professional security practice in the private or public sectors.

They must also have attained a standard of protective security expertise either through completion of management security training, or the grading of a written test set by the Institute.

Progression from graduate to member can be by means of a thesis on a specialist security subject or the taking of a detailed examination programme which provides the criteria for advancement in the Institute.

Normal progression to fellow is by the submission of a special thesis, subjects selected by the Institute Board.

Since the Institute was first formed in 1978, it has been instrumental in publishing the definitive book "Protective Security - A South African Approach" which is now in its third edition. In company with the South African Security Federation, the Institute developed the training levels and standards for the industry which have now been adopted by the Security Officers'' Board Training Committee.

A condition of membership of the Institute is that all categories of members bind themselves to the provisions of a Code of Ethics and accept that compliance with this code shall be an ongoing condition of membership of the Institute.
